आज हम अंग्रेजी वर्णमाला (English Alphabet) में केवल 26 अक्षर पढ़ते हैं, लेकिन साल 1835 से पहले इसमें कुल 27 अक्षर हुआ करते थे! इस वर्णमाला का 27वां अक्षर कोई और नहीं, बल्कि आज का जाना-माना साइन "&" (Ampersand) था। उस दौर में स्कूलों में बच्चों को 'Z' के ठीक बाद '&' भी पढ़ाया जाता था। इसे पढ़ते समय बच्चे बोलते थे "and per se and" (यानी 'and' जो अपने आप में एक स्वतंत्र अक्षर है)। लगातार और तेजी से बोलने के कारण यह पूरा वाक्यांश आपस में जुड़कर 'Ampersand' बन गया। बाद में भाषाविदों ने माना कि यह कोई मौलिक ध्वनि नहीं बल्कि सिर्फ एक सिंबल है, जिसके बाद इसे आधिकारिक वर्णमाला से हटा दिया गया।

Today we read only 26 letters in the English alphabet, but before the year 1835, it actually contained 27 letters! The 27th letter of this traditional alphabet was none other than the well-known symbol "&" (Ampersand). At that time, school children were strictly taught to recite '&' right after the letter 'Z'. While chanting the alphabet, children used to say "and per se and" (which meant 'and' by itself is a letter). Over time, rapid repetition and slurred speech transformed this entire phrase into the modern word 'Ampersand'. Later, linguists officially decided it was just a typographical symbol representing a word rather than a unique phonetic sound, so it was removed, leaving just 26 letters.
