27 अगस्त 1859 को अमेरिकी इंजीनियर एडविन ड्रेक के कुएँ से पेंसिल्वेनिया के टाइटसविल में सफलतापूर्वक कच्चा तेल निकाला गया। इस उपलब्धि को अमेरिका में आधुनिक पेट्रोलियम उद्योग की शुरुआत से जोड़ा जाता है। इसके बाद तेल का व्यावसायिक उत्पादन तेजी से बढ़ा और ऊर्जा तथा उद्योग की दुनिया में बड़ा परिवर्तन आया।On 27 August 1859, American engineer Edwin Drake’s well in Titusville, Pennsylvania, successfully produced crude oil. The achievement is widely associated with the beginning of the modern petroleum industry in the United States. Commercial oil production expanded rapidly afterward, transforming energy, transportation and industry around the world.
