सिक्के को उछालते समय हम जो 'Head' और 'Tail' बोलते हैं, उसकी शुरुआत आज से करीब 2100 साल पहले प्राचीन रोमन साम्राज्य से हुई थी, जहाँ इस खेल को "नाविया अउत कापुत" यानी "जहाज या सिर" कहा जाता था क्योंकि उस समय के रोमन सिक्कों के एक तरफ राजा का सिर और दूसरी तरफ एक समुद्री जहाज बना होता था; बाद में मध्यकाल में ब्रिटिश सिक्कों के पिछले हिस्से पर पूंछ उठाए हुए शाही शेर (Heraldic Lion) का चित्र होने के कारण और शरीर रचना के नियम (सिर का उल्टा पूंछ) के तहत सिक्के के दूसरे भाग को 'Tail' कहा जाने लगा, जिसका "Heads or Tails" के रूप में लिखित तौर पर पहला आधिकारिक जिक्र साल 1684 में एक ब्रिटिश नाटक में मिलता है।

The terms 'Head' and 'Tail' we use while flipping a coin originated around 2,100 years ago in the ancient Roman Empire, where this game was called "Navia aut Caput" meaning "ship or head" because Roman coins of that era featured a king's head on one side and a ship on the other; later in the Middle Ages, the reverse side came to be called 'Tail' due to the depiction of a heraldic lion with a raised tail on British coins, as well as the anatomical logic (tail being the opposite of head), with the phrase "Heads or Tails" making its first official written appearance in a British play in the year 1684.
