Did You Know ?
The True History of Snakes and Ladders?
We have all played Snakes and Ladders in our childhood, but did you know that this classic game originated in ancient India? Centuries ago, it was known as 'Moksha Patam' or 'Paramapada Sopanam'. It was not just a source of entertainment, but a tool to teach children morality and spirituality. The ladders in the game represented good virtues like kindness, honesty, and knowledge, which guided a person toward heaven or salvation (Moksha). Conversely, the snake heads symbolized vices like theft, anger, and greed, which led to a person's downfall. The final square, number 100, represented the attainment of salvation. In the 19th century, British rulers took this game from India to England, where it became 'Snakes and Ladders', and later in America, it was named 'Chutes and Ladders'. Even today, this game teaches us that life has its ups and downs, but good deeds ultimately lead us forward.
