The Freedom We Did Not See
Respected Chief Guest, Respected Principal, respected teachers, dear parents, and my dear friends,
Good morning and a very happy Independence Day to everyone.
There is something strange about our generation.
We talk about freedom every year, but most of us have never experienced the absence of freedom.
We were born in an independent India.
We have never seen British rule.
We have never experienced the fear that many Indians faced before 1947.
For us, freedom feels normal.
But it was not always normal.
There was a time when Indians had to fight for their rights.
There was a time when speaking against injustice could bring punishment.
There was a time when thousands of people were ready to sacrifice their comfort, their careers and even their lives for the dream of an independent India.
When we read history, we usually remember famous names.
But behind every famous freedom fighter, there were thousands of ordinary people.
There were mothers who waited for their sons.
There were fathers who watched their children leave home.
There were students who joined movements.
There were farmers, workers and women who supported the freedom struggle in different ways.
Many of them never became famous.
Many of them never appeared in textbooks.
But their contribution mattered.
Today, when we stand under the free Indian sky, we are enjoying something that another generation fought very hard to give us.
That is why Independence Day should make us grateful.
But it should also make us responsible.
Because freedom can be protected only when citizens understand its value.
We must protect our unity.
We must respect our Constitution.
We must respect people who are different from us.
We must use our freedom wisely.
And we must never allow hatred to become stronger than our love for the country.
As students, we may feel that we are too young to make a difference.
But we are not.
The habits we develop today will become our character tomorrow.
If we learn honesty today, we will become honest citizens tomorrow.
If we learn kindness today, we will build a kinder society tomorrow.
If we learn discipline today, we will become responsible citizens tomorrow.
So today, while remembering the people who gave us freedom, let us make a promise.
Let us not take freedom for granted.
Let us value it.
Let us protect it.
And let us use it to build a better India.
The freedom we did not see was earned through sacrifice.
The India we will see tomorrow will be shaped by our actions today.
