The India We Will Build
Respected Chief Guest, Respected Principal, respected teachers, dear parents, and my dear friends,
A very happy Independence Day to all of you.
Today, we are celebrating 80 years of independent India.
But instead of looking only at the past, I want to look at the future.
I want to imagine India in 2047, when our country will complete 100 years of independence.
What will that India look like?
Will it be a country with better technology?
I hope so.
Will it have better roads, better schools and better hospitals?
I hope so.
But I think we should ask a deeper question.
Will it also be a kinder India?
Will it be an India where every child gets an opportunity?
Will it be an India where people respect one another?
Will it be an India where development does not come at the cost of nature?
Will it be an India where success and humanity grow together?
That India will not be created by technology alone.
It will be created by people.
And some of those people are sitting here today.
We are today's students.
Tomorrow, we will become doctors, teachers, engineers, scientists, soldiers, entrepreneurs, artists, farmers and leaders.
Whatever profession we choose, we will have an opportunity to contribute to India.
But contribution does not always mean doing something extraordinary.
Sometimes it means doing ordinary things with extraordinary honesty.
A doctor treating every patient with dignity.
A teacher teaching every child with patience.
An engineer building something safely.
A businessperson working honestly.
A student studying sincerely.
A citizen following the law.
A neighbour helping someone in need.
This is how a country grows.
We often say that the youth are the future of India.
But I think there is another truth.
The youth are not only the future. We are also the present.
What we learn today matters.
What we believe today matters.
How we treat people today matters.
Our dreams matter.
So, on this Independence Day, let us dream of a strong India.
But let us also dream of a kind India.
A clean India.
A peaceful India.
A confident India.
An India where every child can say,
“I have a dream, and I have a chance to achieve it.”
The freedom fighters of the past gave us an independent India.
Now, it is our turn to build the India of tomorrow.
When the 100th Independence Day comes in 2047, I hope we will be able to look back and say—
We did our part.
We studied.
We worked.
We cared.
We served.
And we made India a little better than we found it.
That is the India I want to build.
And I hope you will build it with me.
